Fleming Feirm
Welcome to the Fleming Feirm web site! We are located in Bliss Township, northern Emmet County, Michigan. On our 20-acre homestead (originally developed in the 1950s) we raise pastured chickens and turkeys as well as beef and pork.
Our Mission
To provide high quality food to our customers using natural grass fed, local, and sustainable farming practices.
Fleming Feirm Philosophy
We believe that good food is becoming too hard to find in today’s society. What’s worse, we feel that most people don’t even realize what good food is anymore. The food you eat should be
healthy, delicious, and raised in a sustainable manner. We do not use antibiotics, pesticides, steroids, or hormones in any situation. Pasture-raised meats, eggs, and milk have been shown to have more of what's good, and less of what's bad. It also happens to provide real flavor that cannot be duplicated in the scientifically balanced rations that commercial farms employ.
Most of what you don’t trust about food produced in mass is a direct result of man trying to overdo what nature’s capacity would normally allow. Beef feed lots are a great way to mass produce hamburger but the downside is a need for antibiotics and horrible environmental impacts from waste run off. The reason is simple: there are too many animals per unit area. The same is true in the chicken industry and even if you never saw what happened, you can tell in the final product. Color, texture, and flavor have all been compromised in the modern-day production of meat. In Gene Logsdon's book, “The Contrary Farmer,” I think Gene hits the na
il on the head when he states that modern day factory farmers are not farmers; they are factory workers, and poorly paid ones at that!
We also believe that Feirming is a great way to stay connected to the real world. Our kids see Feirm life firsthand including the joy of newborn baby calves or day-old chicks as well as the reality of how some of these animals become our food. We teach them that all living creatures are to be treated with respect and cared for in the best, most humane manner possible. This is not only good for the animal but it is also good for the Feirmer. We hope our kids will see that hard work has its rewards and, just as your momma always told you, it builds character.
